Schools are among the most vulnerable targets for malware – and students can easily use computers to access inappropriate content. At the same time, budgets often do not allow for large investments.
Since its founding in 1966, Colegio Retamar has been one of the most prestigious schools in Madrid (Spain). It offers primary and secondary education, emphasizing academic learning and social values. At Colegio Retamar, computers have become an indispensable educational tool as well as a popular pastime for pupils. However, when working on an assignment or accessing the internet, pupils must be protected from digital threats ranging from malware infections to ageinappropriate content. With over 2100 pupils and about 150 teachers, computer security is one of the most important issues Colegio Retamar faces. The school was looking for a security solution that would not only protect their computers from malware but also enforce security policies, regulate the use of classroom computers and control pupils’ internet surfing, as well as preventing unknown USB devices from being connected. Jesús Niño, responsible for Colegio Retamar’s IT systems, explains: “Retamar has the budgetary opportunities and restraints of any typical school. Therefore, as other schools, we were looking for software solutions that met our requirements and at the same time would be easy to deploy and manage.” To allow for further savings, Colegio Retamar wanted its teaching staff to be able to configure the solution, in addition to the typical maintenance and configuration tasks carried out by its IT administrators. “Teachers need to be able to carry out some of the administration tasks, for example when they need to respond immediately to issues that arise during class. But the administration console of our previous solution did not allow us to delegate administration tasks,” says Niño.
As the school was planning a major upgrade of its network, it seized the opportunity to migrate to a new security solution. G DATA Endpoint Protection Business met all requirements and offered an opportunity for large savings. Niño: “Right away, we found out that G DATA could help us reduce costs by 60 percent.” Endpoint Protection Business was deployed to two virtual servers as well as 110 computer room clients and 100 networked computers located in different locations, such as offices and classrooms with networked whiteboards. The deployment was completed without problems: “The questions and minor issues we encountered during the migration were adequately resolved by the technical support.”
Colegio Retamar is very satisfied with the successful deployment. “G DATA met all of our expectations. We managed to realise a significant cost reduction while deploying an effective anti-malware protection,” says Niño. The clear layout of the administration console of Endpoint Protection Business has led to a reduction in the time spent on configuring and monitoring network clients. Productivity of the teachers in charge of the computer rooms increased. “For us, the fact that the console is so easy to manage, even when delegating management to the teachers themselves, is the unique selling point of Endpoint Protection Business.”
