CeBIT launches initiative for greater security on the net

G Data and BdK support "CeBIT against Cybercrime"
London, 25. February 2011

"Every two seconds there is some type of Internet attack in Germany," said Federal Minister of the Interior Thomas de Maizière at this year's CeBIT security conference in Munich.  Furthermore  the boundaries between crime, spying and terrorism are increasingly becoming blurred, he added.  BITKOM is raising the alarm that there were 22 million victims of viruses, six million people were defrauded while shopping online and estimated 15 million Euro in damages to online banking in 2010 - these are the disturbing figures from a survey carried out by the high-tech industry association in collaboration with the Federal Criminal Police Office (Bundeskriminalamt - BKA). To prepare for the increasing threats  on the net, the leading trade show for the digital industry is joining with G Data Software AG and the German Police Union (Bund deutscher Kriminalbeamter - BdK) to launch the "CeBIT against Cybercrime" initiative.

The aim of the initiative is to increase understanding of cyber crime and offer comprehensive information on the subject of Internet crime. In addition to the various activities at CeBIT, a new Internet platform is being created.

At www.cebit.de/en/about-the-trade-show/programme/cebit-pro/it-security representatives from various sectors including politics,  business and science will highlight the risks on the net and will present steps available to protect against hacker attacks.

The "CeBIT against Cybercrime" initiative kicks off with a live show called "Google Hacking - I can find something you don't want me to" on March 1st on the stage in Hall 19. From 1:30pm to 3:30pm CeBIT attendees can see firsthand how criminals opperate on the net. The following podium debate entitled "Internet crime - risks, threats and how to protect yourself" also will take place shortly afterwards. Speakers and topics include:

 Klaus Jansen, Federal Chairman, BdK: "Everything that is outlawed in the real world must be prosecutable on the net as well"

 Ralf Benzmüller, Head of Security Labs at G Data Software AG: "Cybercrime is a big business, run in organised structures. The daily flood of new malware is just one symptom."

 Christoph Fischer, Head of BFK and expert in computer forensics: "The crooks on the Internet are virtuosos in abusing the complexities of technology that is difficult to master. Anything that looks secure will be hacked into in a perfidious manner."

 Axel E. Fischer, CDU member of the German parliament and chairman of the inquiry commission 'Internet and Digital Business': "We need a ban on identity concealment on the Internet."

At CeBIT on Friday March 4th, from 11am to 12pm in Hall 19, there will be a much-anticipated second round of discussions involving the Ministers of Interior for the regions of Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony Klaus Schlie and Uwe Schünemann, Vice-President of the Federal Criminal Police Office Professor Jürgen Stock, and solicitor and criminologist Professor Bernd-Dieter Meier. They will all be commenting on the new security challenges in the Internet age.
