Google “does world a favour” by exposing lack of home WiFi security
With every British newspaper carrying coverage of Google’s inadvertent capture of personal data during its Street View project, Eddy Willems, world-renowned internet security expert and Security Evangelist for G Data, is available to comment on the home-security implications of the Google debacle including:
- - Why Google may have done the world a favour by being so publicly caught and exposing home WiFi network weakness
- - The necessity for home WiFi networks to be password-protected and encrypted
- - The susceptibility of unencrypted home networks to hacking and data theft
Eddy Willems comments: “The furore surrounding Google’s seemingly inadvertent capture of private data stems from the belief that individuals have a right to privacy. However, just as homeowners have learned to lock their front doors to keep their homes safe, so they must also appreciate the need to password-protect and encrypt their home WiFi networks to avoid accidental or deliberate interception of their data. Although Google will be heavily criticised for what has happened I believe they have actually done the world a favour by exposing the current vulnerability of far too many home WiFi networks.”
